What qualifies as valid items that can be donated and appraised?
Generally, items of art, literature, music and various types of collectables including natural history artifacts and specimens.
How are the values of the collections and specimens determined?
The values are a reflection of fair market value, or a value that would be supported within a public market if such items were available commercially.
What types of documentation are needed?
1.
An acknowledgment and "deed of gift" from the donee.
2.
A detailed report of the appraisal indicating the specifics of the items donated and the values assigned.

3.
The completed IRS form 8283 (Noncash Charitable Contributions) which is signed by the donor, tax preparer (if any) and the appraiser.
